PRESS RELEASE

Justice for 'G11'

There are numerous alarming reports from various sources regarding the Government of Eritrea's intentions to execute all or some of the former ministers and top PFDJ officials under arrest since September 2001.

The Eritrean government continues to hold these prisoners commonly referred to as the G11* illegally and incommunicado in complete contradiction to the Eritrean Constitution, Eritrea’s Penal Code, as well as International agreements that Eritrea is a party to.

It is to be remembered that the African Commission for Human and People’s Rights concluded that the detentions were inconsistent with the agreements that Eritrea has signed up to and strongly urged the government of Eritrea to immediately release all 11 detainees and compensate them for the wrongful imprisonment.  Interparliamentary Union, Amnesty International and various other governmental and non-governmental bodies also repeatedly called for the release of all parliamentarians.  Four years after their arrest and two years after the Commission’s decision, none of the detainees have been released or brought before a recognised court of justice; instead they continue to languish in unknown detention centers incommunicado.

This latest move to reignite re-incriminations similar to those attempted in the months following their arrest is a concerning sign of the ill intents of the regime. EHDR-UK calls on all Eritreans and members of the International community to call for justice, on behalf of the G11 who are all without exception heroes of the Eritrea’s struggle for independence.
