NECS-Europe writes a letter to Dr Toni Borg

London, 2 Oct 2003

NECS-Europe wrote to the Maltese Home Affairs Minister, Dr Toni Borg, highlighting the plight of the Eritrean

refugees currently held in Malta.  The letter highlighted the plight of those currently on a hunger strike and those who were deported to Eritrea.  The letter stated that the Maltese authorities should refrain from deporting any more Eritreans as the fate of those already deported remained unclear.

The letter stated, "we are aware of the size of Malta and its population density. What we fail to understand is why your government treats Eritrean refugees differently as other countries seem to understand the plight of the Eritrean people. Smaller countries and poorer countries than Malta, with the help of UN are other humanitarian agencies, managed the influx of refugees and did not resort to cruel acts of forceful deportation. On the contrary, although their economic situation is worse than that of Malta they extended their helping hands".

It concluded by saying "Based on the facts regarding those who were deported, we urge you to look into their cases sympathetically and allow them to have a dignified stay in Malta until the situation in their home country improves or they find ways to join their relatives somewhere else. We also ask you to release the official names of those deported so that we can alert their whereabouts to their families and loved ones".
